FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why did FLASH transition to at-home learning?

The simplest answer is safety. FLASH is scheduled to open June 29. Governor Murphy mandated that New Jersey schools remain closed through the end of June.  Our previously planned opening at LCJSMS conflicted with this executive order. FLASH At-Home allows our staff, students, and families to move forward with a firm plan, and it aligns with current guidelines, regulations, and executive orders. .

What will FLASH At-Home look like?

All students in FLASH Jr and FLASH Pro will choose 4 courses from our course catalogs.
  • You can view Course Expectations to understand course structure and format.
  • View the FLASH Jr Catalog (Upcoming Grades (2-4)
  • View the FLASH Pro Catalog (Upcoming Grades 5-8)

What does my child need to participate in FLASH At-Home?

  • Access to the internet; preferably via a computer, laptop, Chromebook, or tablet
  • Summit Google Account - This begins with a 5-digit I.D. followed by the @summit.k12.nj.us address
  • Materials listed for registered courses.  Materials can be found on the course catalogs.

Do I need to help teach my child?

You know your child best. However, 100% of our staff are state certified teachers, and they are professionals. They have designed lessons that should be mostly independent and age-appropriate with little assistance from parents. Of course, supervision for safety from a parent or guardian is always expected.

Can you explain tuition? How is the amount determined?

FLASH's budget is independent of the annual Summit Board of Ed budget.  Tax dollars do NOT directly support the FLASH budget. All of FLASH's expenses including materials, insurance, and staff compensation come from tuition. In 2020 FLASH At-Home, we have been able to reduce tuition by 50% due to savings on materials, building expenses, and changes to our FLASH schedule.

My child has a Summit Schools Chromebook. Will he/she be able to use this during FLASH?

Yes. The technology department is allowing FLASH students to continue using district Chromebooks through the duration of FLASH At-Home.  No action on your part is required.

Where do I get a musical instrument for band or orchestra lessons?

Your are free to order from any company you wish.  Summit Schools and FLASH have a positive relationship with Elefante Music in New Providence.  They are open!  More Information regarding musical instrument rentals will be available soon.
*Summit Schools, nor FLASH, receive compensation or commission from sales or rentals.  This information is only provided to help students and families participate in our music programs.

What happened to Sports Academy?

Due regulations, we cannot safely offer Sports Academy as a separate program like we have in the past.  However, we are excited that we have been able to add most sports academy courses to the course offerings for FLASH Jr & FLASH Pro.

What if my child cannot complete an activity on the day it is posted?

Don't worry!  Google Classroom's platform lists all assignments in a stream.  Students can simply scroll down to see yesterday's assignment, or even last week's assignment!
